Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon Update Post (April 2017)

Hello everyone! It's that time of year again; Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is starting now! If you follow me on twitter (@blog_gal) you know that I'm super excited about this read-a-thon, as always.

Mostly, I will be putting my updates on Twitter, but occasionally, I will come back here for a Mini Challenge and also update my reading status.

Are you joining in on the readathon fun? What does your TBR look like?

Opening Meme

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?

Texas :) My first year participating from Texas. Had to get up an hour earlier, but it was worth it.

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?

Burning Proof by Janice Cantore. It is the second book in a crime series. I just bought this book this week.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?

Oreos. Chocolate is always good.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?

I have done quite a few readathons at this point. Since I am finally at a M-F job, I have the weekends off and I am going to try to make it the whole 24 hours this year.

Mini Challenges

The blog Pirates and Pixie Dust hosted a challenge called "The Meet-Up" for hour 4 of the readathon. Here is my entry:

CR: Burning Proof/LR: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Detective Abby Hart was on the tails of the killer of a 10 year old girl. As she knocked on the door for the house of a suspect, she heard strange noises inside and realized she also smelled smoke. Abby knocked down the door to discover an unkempt fire had overtaken the fireplace in the suspects home. Abby followed the ashy trail that was coming from the fireplace and found a small grey serpent with glowing red eyes that she later learned was called a Ashwinder. Her suspect was a wizard and a fire left from floo powder had overtaken his home as he narrowly escaped Abby Hart.
The blog Estella's Revenge hosted a challenge called "Six Word Story" where you describe the readathon in six words. Here is my entry:
Celebrating reading and chatting with friends!

Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon: TBR and Plans

Button made by: http://www.truebookaddict.com/
Here it comes again! Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is THIS SATURDAY! Have you signed up yet? If not, you can sign up for the readathon here.

Today, I am going to talk about my reading goals for this readathon and show you my TBR grab pile. My reading goals are pretty light as compared to previous Dewey's readathons. I am going to be working from 12 (noon) EST to around 9 or 10 PM EST, so I am not sure how many hours of reading I will be able to get in. I hope to read before I go to work, during my lunch break, after I get off work for a few hours, and maybe I'll even wake up early and read before church since the readathon ends at 8 AM on Sunday for me. I am hoping to read at least 5 hours on Saturday/Sunday morning.

I will be cheering fellow readers on Twitter using the hashtag (#readathon). I plan on tweeting throughout the readathon (when I am not at work) and updating my progress there. I do plan on having a progress post here on my blog, but I will not be able to update that as frequently. Additionally, I will be doing some of the hourly mini-challenges and you can find those updates on my blog and on twitter as well.

Since I won't be able to read much, my TBR is also a little light. I want to continue reading Rachelle Dekker's latest book, The Calling, a christian dystopian novel. Honestly, this book is so good that I may have finished it before Saturday, but we will see. I  also plan on starting the audiobook of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone this week and continue listening to it during the readathon. Most likely, this will be the book that I listen to when I have my lunch break at work. Lastly, I may start reading No One to Trust by Lynette Eason. This is a christian fiction novel mystery novel.

If you are signed up for the read-a-thon, what are your goals and what are you reading?  I would love to hear about your read-a-thon progress during and after the read-a-thon! Comment below or tweet me at @blog_gal.

Hour 6 Mini-Challenge: Top Ten List

Button made by: http://www.truebookaddict.com/
It's hour six. You are already 1/4 of the way finished with the read-a-thon! Way to go! Keep it up! If you are just now starting, that's great too!

It's time to take a break with a little mini-challenge, David Letterman style. It's time to make your top 10 list of something that has to do with the read-a-thon. Awesome idea right? Well, it's not totally mine. I have to give credit to a 2008 mini-challenge host, jillora (@JilleeBeene). I asked around the Twitter-sphere about your favorite mini-challenges from previous years and this one came up. I loved the idea and decided to bring back this amazing mini-challenge. The original challenge can be found here.

As a thanks for being awesome (you know you are), I am also having a giveaway where you will have a chance to win your choice of either a 15 USD Amazon gift card OR a book from Book Depository for 15 USD or less. To enter the giveaway, post your Top Ten list in the comments and leave a way for me to contact you if you win (email, Twitter, Goodreads, ect.). I will then use a random number generator to determine the winner.

So without further ado, here is my Top 10 list.

Top 10 Ways to Enjoy Dewey's Readathon

10. Talk on Twitter. I'm sure you will find a new friend or two and maybe even get a book recommendation. Don't we all need more books on our TBR piles?

9. Eat lots of snacks. This can be a cheat day. Calories don't count on read-a-thon days, right?

8. Do mini-challenges :)

7.  Stay hydrated. Sleepiness will come if you don't get plenty of fluids.

6. Take naps. You will remember more of what you have read and enjoy yourself more if you aren't totally sleep deprived.

5. Cheer for others. Even if you aren't registered as a cheerleader, we usually have a few rogue ones around #TeamRogue

4. Take a break to play with your kitty [may not apply to everyone, but definitely applies to me :) ]

3. Read with your kids. Involve them in the read-a-thon as well.

2. Read, read, read

1. Don't stress about how much you haven't read. Just have fun!

Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon: Update Post (October 2015)

Hello everyone! It's that time of year again; Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is starting now. If you follow me on twitter (@blog_gal) you know that I'm super excited about this read-a-thon, as always. This go around, I am going catch up on some of the books that I have received for review. I have a variety of genres, mostly within Christian fiction, to read. I have both hard copies and a few ebooks.

Before the readathon, I have read 153 pages of Drawing Fire by Janice Cantore. I received this book from the publisher (Tyndale Fiction) for review and I am loving it! It is a Christian crime novel with the main character being a female Cold Case cop. I am going to start with reading this one.

Mostly, I will be putting my updates on Twitter, but occasionally, I will come back here for a Mini Challenge and also update my reading status.

Are you joining in on the readathon fun? What does your TBR look like?

Opening Meme

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
Georgia, USA

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?

Drawing Fire by Janice Cantore

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?

My husband is making a Riesling Gelee with Raspberry Conserve :)

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!

I love to read (obviously). I am currently a forensic DNA analyst, but I am looking to change to a genetic counselor. I currently have an internship doing research in forensic DNA at an army base.

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?
Something I'm doing different is that I had little to no planning for this readathon. My TBR is the books that I have received for review. I just wrote this post this morning. I haven't updated the Excel file for this readathon that I usually use to track my reading progress. I'm a slacker, but that's okay :)

For this challenge, I thought of one of my favorite authors, C.S. Lewis. Here is one of my favorite quotes by him:
I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.

Today, I am going to talk about my reading goals for this readathon and show you my TBR grab pile. Here are my reading goals:
    • Out of these 21 hours that I was awake, I read actively for 8.5 hours. For this readathon, I hope to read actively for at least 10 hours.
    • Read 1000 pages. In the october readathon, I read 859 pages (including graphic novels and childrens chapter books). My average reading pace overall was 1.68 pages/minute. By this rate and the additional hours that I plan to read, I should be able to reach this goal.
    • Last readathon, I finished 2 adult novellas, 1 graphic novel, and 3 children's novels, for a total of 6 books. This readathon, I hope to finish 7 books.
Now for my TBR grab pile. These are the books that I plan on choosing from during the readathon.  I may grab some other books, but these are the ones that I am particularly interested in at the moment. There are too many in my grab pile to discuss here, so I have created a shelf on Goodreads that can be found here.

Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon (Saturday, April 25): Updated Book Recommendations for Readathons

    Button made by: http://www.truebookaddict.com/

Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon is next weekend and I am ecstatic about it! If you missed my last post about Dewey's readathon, you can find it here. Are you beginning to gather your books for your TBR pile for the readathon? For today's post, I am updating my book recommendations for readathons.  My previous recommendations can be found here. The books below are my additional recommendations.

Firstly, I am going to start with some books that I read during the last Dewey's Readathon. During that readathon, I read a lot of Children's fiction, novellas, and graphic novels. Here are my recommendations from the last readathon.

    Children's fiction

Dying to Meet You by Kate Kline is my first recommendation. This is a hilarious children's fiction novel about a boy that moves into a haunted house. This book is written completely in letters and newspaper articles. This was a quick read and I really enjoyed the novel. I gave this book 5/5 stars. You can find my full review for this book here.

    Adult Clean Romance Novella

The Year of Weddings novellas are my second recommendation.  The novellas in this series are clean romance novels, each written by a different author. I love novellas for a readathon because I can get a lot of them read and I fell like I have accomplished a lot at the end of the readathon. I have read the first two books in this series, both during the last readathon, and I gave them an average rating of 4.5/5 stars.

Lastly, I would like to recommend two young adult novels and a newly released novella that I have read since the last readathon. These are both full length novels, but they are really engaging and to me were pretty quick reads.

My next recommendation is the Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry. I have read the first three books in this quartet and they were amazing! I gave them an average of 4.7/5 stars. This is an action packed dystopian series with each book having different main characters.  The first book, The Giver, is about Jonas who is in a world where everything is seemingly perfect. There is no war, no fear, and no pain. Jonas is singled out to recieve special training from the Giver, but can he handle all that he has to encounter? You can read my full review of The Giver here.

In Between by Jenny B. Jones is a YA Christian fiction contemporary novel about a girl that is in foster care and is moved to a new foster home in the middle of no where. Filled with both laughter and sentimental moments, In Between is a book that I would recommend to anyone looking for a great, light, inspirational read. This book was also free on Amazon when I purchased it (and it may still be). I gave this book 5/5 stars. You can find my full review here.
12 Hours by Hannah Harvey is a YA contemporary fiction novella (released last week) that occurs two months after Ivy's boyfriend breaks up with her on graduation day with no explanation. The events of the book happen within 12 hours. This is a great, quick (only 65 pages), intense read that would be great for any readathon. My full review can be found here.

Are you signed up for Dewey's 24H Readathon? If not, you can sign up here. Do you want to be a cheerleader? You can learn more about being a cheerleader and how to sign up here. Do you want to host a mini-challenge? You can sign up for hosting a mini-challenge here.

If you are signed up for the read-a-thon, what are your goals?  I would love to hear about your read-a-thon progress during and after the read-a-thon! Comment below or tweet me at @blog_gal.
